Home on the Range

Home on the Range Review

Home on the Range Feature

  • Round up the family and get ready for a whole lotta fun with Disney's hilarious animated comedy HOME ON THE RANGE. It's a "total joy," raves Gene Shalit, The Today Show. When a greedy outlaw schemes to take possession of the "Patch Of Heaven" dairy farm, three determined cows, a karate-kicking stallion named Buck, and a colorful coral of critters join forces to save their home. The stakes
A spiky animation style and cowboy yodelling give Home on the Range some charisma. A trio of cows--Maggie (voiced by Roseanne, She-Devil), Mrs. Calloway (Judi Dench, Iris), and Grace (Jennifer Tilly, Bound)--hit the high prairie to track down a cattle rustler named Alameda Slim (Randy Quaid, Kingpin) in hopes that the reward money will save their farm. With the aid of Buck, a horse with heroic ambitions (Cuba Gooding Jr., Jerry Maguire), the bovine avengers track the villain to his lair and save the day, to the accompaniment of tunes warbled by k.d. lang, Bonnie Raitt, and Tim McGraw. These songs--composed by Alan Menken (who wrote the music for The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast)--are the movie's strongest element; the characters are largely trumped up to fit a number of weak jokes that reference current pop culture, thus rupturing the movie's Old West world. Still, it looks nifty. --Bret Fetzer Voices of Roseanne Barr, Dame Judi Dench, Jennifer Tilly, Cuba Gooding., Jr. When a gang of outlaws want to take over a peaceful dairy farm in the Old West, its inhabitants-three clever cows and a stallion among them-try to outwit the bungling would-be usurpers. Animated. 2004/color/76 min/G/widescreen.

Which Way Home

Which Way Home Review

Which Way Home Feature

  • WHICH WAY HOME (DVD MOVIE)
Nominated for a 2010 Academy Award, Which Way Home, through its shocking depictions of neglected immigrant children struggling to sneak into America by train, manages to charm viewers into concern for its audacious young stars. Director Rebecca Cammisa's choice to focus almost exclusively on interviews with the train-hopping children, who range in age from roughly 8 to 18, makes this documentary infinitely more touching and effective. One gets a more well-rounded impression of the socioeconomic problem here; for every feeling of liberation the children experience, there are dangers lurking around the corner, several of which come to fruition during the filming period covered. For example, Kevin, a 14-year-old Honduran boy, and his pal, Yurico, a.k.a. "The Dog," a 17-year-old from Chiapas, occupy the bulk of the film footage, as the two boys and their cohorts ride "The Beast" through various territories. But as they skirt some sketchy situations, they can't help but tell stories of less lucky children who die on the trains en route to the United States. Additionally, tracing the aftereffects of their journey offers a less than ideal outcome for both boys. Many of the children in Which Way Home, like José from El Salvador, have experienced abandonment by their parents, who left in search of income and provided little in the way of role models. A few key scenes, like that filmed in the Guatemalan Consul where national officials interview boys before deporting them back to their home countries, and the scene showing Grupos Beta, a grassroots group that travels by van alongside the trains to provide free supplies and medical care to these children, are inspiring. Still, one comes to realize that the problem is overwhelming, as viewers gain access to the filthy flophouses, like House of Migrants, that are packed wall to wall with minors running away from home to find work. However, Cammisa captures a certain hobo humor here, which permeates the film's sad subject matter, as the boys tell jokes, lounge around with each other in the most brotherly ways, and care for each other in the absence of their parents. While Which Way Home chronicles a problem that demands attention, it does so in a touching manner, leaving its star characters' dignities intact as they confess their motivations, namely devout family loyalty. --Trinie Dalton Traversing more than 1450 miles upcountry Mexican freight trains routinely are boarded by migrants hoping to reach America. Among the thousands who ride the trains many are children traveling alone. They come from all over Mexico and Central America risking everything for the chance of a better life. Academy Award-® nominee WHICH WAY HOME follows some of these unaccompanied children as they make the long and treacherous voyage to the U.S. border. Some like Olga and Freddy venture out in search of distant relatives. Others like Kevin hope to find work to support their families at home. Often traveling for months or even years at a time these courageous and determined children each have stories of hope and resilience disappointment and sorrow. Chronicling the harrowing journey of thousands of migrant children WHICH WAY HOME illuminates a powerfully human side of immigration. DVD includes Two Version of the Feature-Length Film: Spanish Language and Spanish with English

Home from the Hill

Home from the Hill Review

Home from the Hill Feature

  • Southern drama involving a wealthy landowner's conflicts with his wife and two sons, one of which is illegitimate.Running Time: 150 min. Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: DRAMA Rating: NR Age: 012569795396 UPC: 012569795396 Manufacturer No: 79539
Home from the Hill is among the underrated titles in the careers of Robert Mitchum and Vincente Minnelli, two disparate talents who create a potent familial saga here. The setting is East Texas, where Mitchum's philandering patriarch rules the local area. His wife (Eleanor Parker) has raised their son (George Hamilton) as a momma's boy, the kind of soft kid who gets bamboozled into going on a "snipe hunt" with the pranking locals. His opposite number is a manly farmhand (George Peppard) with his own bond with Mitchum. Southern melodrama thrives in such a setting, and the film doesn't avoid all the traps, but Minnelli suffuses the movie with the same emotional effects of color and movement that he brought to his direction of musicals. Minnelli's sensitivity and Mitchum's strength carry the movie, but the secret weapon is the unexpectedly good work from the two Georges, both of whom were at the beginning of their careers. (You can see from this film that Peppard is a dead-cert to become a major movie star, which he almost did--but then didn't, for a variety of reasons.) The film was shot on location around Paris, Texas, and although this is far from Minnelli's An American in Paris, the exciting hunting sequences are solid proof that you can't pigeonhole a talented director. You can't pigeonhole Mitchum, either, and this is one of his best roles.
